The Game Awards 2021 was held in front of a live audience and premiered on December 9, 2021, in Los Angeles, and was streamed on over 40 different platforms with over 85 million viewers watching the show. During the ceremony, the best games released in 2021 were given awards, including the Game of the Year award. The six games that were nominated for this award were the following: Deathloop, from Arkane and Bethesda, It Takes Two, from Hazelight and EA, Metroid Dread, from MercurySteam and Nintendo, Psychonauts 2, from Double Fine and Xbox, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, from Insomniac and Sony, and Resident Evil Village, from Capcom.
In the end, It Takes Two ended up winning the award, as well as winning Best Family Game and Best Multiplayer game. Other significant winners include Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy winning Best Narrative, and Maggie Robertson winning best performance for her role in Resident Evil Village as Lady Dimitrescu. It Takes Two also ended up winning the most awards overall, along with Forza Horizon 5, winning 3 each. However, the most nominated game was Deathloop, being nominated for 9 different awards.
Many new games were also introduced during the game awards, such as Alan Wake II, the sequel to the 2010 survival horror game, Sonic Frontiers, an open-world game featuring Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Expanse: A Telltale Series, based off of the sci-fi TV series. In addition, highly anticipated trailers for the Halo television series and the 2nd Sonic the Hedgehog movie also premiered.
The Game Awards 2021 featured many special celebrity guests and musical performances in between the presentation of the awards. For example, Imagine Dragons and Sting appeared to perform during the ceremony. Some other special guests include: Keanu Reeves, Ben Schwartz, Ming-Na Wen, who voiced Mulan in the original 1998 film, and Reggie File-Amie, the former president of Nintendo of America.
Overall, the Game Awards are a celebration of video games released in the past year, and what to look forward to the next.
